Exciton luminescence of solid xenon

Abstract

We have detected free-exciton luminescence in perfect xenon crystals. We observed two new luminescence bands, one of which coincides in resonance with the first band of the Γ(3/2) exciton absorption series, while the other corresponds to intrinsic absorption in the Γ′(3/2) band. We have determined the properties of the exciton luminescence bands and established the basic mechanism of the luminescence in inert-gas crystals.
