Abstract
The mean-square displacement of subsurface atoms is investigated as a function of temperature allowing for changes in the interatomic interaction close to the surface. A method of calculation previously proposed by V. I. Peresada [V. I. Peresada, in: Physics of the Condensed State, No. 2 (FTINT, AN UkrSSR), Khar'kov (1968), p. 172] is employed. The results enable available experimental values of the mean-square displacements of atoms situated in a (100) type surface of fee crystals to be explained satisfactorily.
