Abstract

In studying electromagnetic wave propagation in bismuth a number of features were observed in their excitation in thin planoparallel plates. In particular, upon excitation of the ordinary weakly damped wave, the relationship of this wave with the extraordinary strongly damped wave causes doubling of the impedance oscillation period upon a small change in relative direction of the external magnetic field H, the crystal axis C1, and the exciting field polarization E1. Comparison with the calculated wave spectrum shows that this doubling is caused by transition from the standing wave condition d = n/λ to the condition d = nλ/2. The possibility of such a change in excitation conditions as a function of the angle between H and C1 may be connected with the odd dependence of nondiagonal non-Hall terms of the conductivity tensor on magnetic field.
