Energy-level diagram and magnetic properties of the Pr3+ ion in the double molybdate CsPr(MoO4)2

Abstract
In order to reconstruct the energy-level diagram of the principal term 3H4 of the Pr3+ ion in the crystal field of the single crystal of the orthorhombic molybdate CsPr(MoO4)2, we study the optical absorption spectra in the range 1−2.5 μ over temperatures ranging from 4.2 to 300°K as well as the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility along the principal magnetic axes over the same temperature range. Within the framework of crystal-field theory, as expressed by van Vleck’s formula, we calculate the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility.
