Abstract

Josephson tunnel junctions were prepared on Nb–NbxOy–Pb (with an admixture of 5% In). The tunnel barrier was produced by purification of anodic niobium oxide in a high-frequency plasma with subsequent thermal oxidation of a pure portion over a small area. This method yields long-life stable Josephson junctions with a low critical current. The height and the width of such a tunnel barrier are determined from the shape of its current-voltage characteristic.
