Abstract
It is shown that the anomalous temperature dependence observed for the lowest doublet splitting in the 6H15/2 ground manifold of the Dy3+ ion in monocrystalline RbDy(MoO4)2 in the temperature range 10–20 K may be understood on the basis of a structural phase transition arising due to the interaction of the Dy3+ electronic states with lattice vibrations. A group theoretical analysis of the allowed zone-center second order transitions suggests that the space group of the low symmetry phase is C2h5.
