Abstract

Ultrasound attenuation in metals by electrons localized near dislocations was investigated. In metals with a particular type of electronic spectrum, the level of the chemical potential may fall within the discrete spectrum of the localized electrons. The sound attenuation factor thus becomes an oscillating function of the external parameters controlling the level of the chemical potential (e.g., the pressure or the impurity concentration). The oscillations are very distinct at sufficiently low temperatures for ordered dislocation structures. The picture of the oscillations becomes smeared as the temperature rises, the dislocation distribution is randomized, and impurities are introduced.
