The Law of Eichhorn: Use, Extension and Applicability in South Africa

E. R. Falkenhagena South African Forestry Research Institute

Abstract

SUMMARY The author shows that the generalised law of Eichhorn can be extended to enable the adequate estimation of the total volume production of a stand by its average diameter at breast height. The allometric relationship used as a model is applied on growth data extracted from some pine provenance trials and on data extracted from different yield tables used in Western Europe. Statistical considerations indicate that, to judge the adequacy of the allometric relationship, the size of the residual errors and their distribution around the fitted curve are more important than the coefficients of determination. Statistical refinement such as elimination of the autocorrelation and introduction of additional terms are probably not useful.
