Abstract

The magnetic susceptibility χ of metals near the 2 1/2 order electronic transition is considered with account of the spin-orbit interaction. Relations are obtained, describing the electronic susceptibility of h.c.p. metals when changes occur in the isoenergetic surface topology. The anomalies in the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the magnetic susceptibility χ, observed in cadmium-magnesium alloys, are shown to be in good agreement with theory. A non-monotonic H-dependence of χ with an extremum in the weak field region is predicted. This extremum is due to intraband magnetic breakdown in the vicinity of the conical point.
