Abstract

The increase in the critical temperature of the superconducting transition in thin films is related to the change, due to the surface bending of the bands, of the electron concentration in samples of finite dimension. The empirical film-thickness dependence of the charge-carrier concentration, known from experiments on semimetal films, is substituted into the BCS formula for the Tc. The resulting expression describes well the thickness dependence of the Tc for Al, Sn, and In films.
