Abstract
Infrared absorption spectra of α-nitrogen were studied in the region of phonon vibrations (30–100 cm−1) at a temperature of 8 °K. The resolution of 0.6 cm−1 achieved made it possible to refine the literature values for the frequencies of the bands and to observe several new librational modes, nearly forbidden in IR absorption. It is suggested that the breakdown of the selection rules is caused by the presence of 0.7% of 14N15N molecules in the naturally occurring isotopic mixture of N2 gas.
