Abstract

Using luminescence spectroscopy in xenon cryocrystals we have observed surface resonances due to Γ(3/2) excitons and Γ′(3/2) excitons in the bulk of the crystals and in the subsurface layer. For the dipole active transition from the Γ(3/2) band, the exciton–photon interaction is important. We analyze the properties of the luminescence spectra of thin and bulk samples of crystalline xenon in terms of a surface polariton model, and we explain the observed maxima in the emission.
