Abstract
The deformation contribution to the nonlinear coefficient of absorption of transverse sound in bismuth is investigated in the case where the sound wavelength is much smaller than the electron mean free path. It is shown that the longitudinal electron current in the sound field is equal to zero, even though the sound attenuation is attributable to the longitudinal motion of particles. This effect is not specific to bismuth. The conditions for the experimental observation of nonlinear absorption of transverse sound in bismuth are analyzed.
