Abstract

We derive the dispersion curve for Rayleigh waves taking account of the surface tension in strongly anisotropic crystals. We calculate the contribution ΔCs which these waves make to the low temperature specific heat of such crystals. The observed tendency for ΔCs to increase as the anisotropy increases agrees with previously reported numerical calculations for the surface contribution to the specific heat, ΔC(T). We discuss the connections among the temperature of the inflection on the bulk specific heat curve, the temperature of the maximum on the ΔC(T) curve, and the anisotropy parameter.
