Abstract

It is shown that the diamagnetic susceptibility of a single crystal with a cylindrical cavity contains terms that, as functions of the flux Φ = HS (S is the cross section of the cavity) penetrating into the cavity, oscillate with period Φ0=hc/e. A similiar effect is produced in the presence of an external magnetic field by a solenoid placed in the cavity. In this case the oscillating magnetic moment is, in order of magnitude, equal to (Φ0/HR02)MDHVAosc, where MDHVAocs is the oscillating component of the de Haas–van Alphen magnetic moment and R0 is the sample dimension.
