Abstract
Using acoustic transducers capable of radiating and detecting first and second sound, we have investigated the propagation of sound in the two-phase region of He II-bcc 4He. Two acoustic modes with significantly different velocities have been discovered. Analysis has shown that the faster mode is associated with the propagation of the first sound through the region of liquid and solid helium while the slow mode corresponds to first sound in solid helium and second sound in liquid helium. The data obtained indicate that the coefficient of transformation of first sound into second sound at the liquid-solid helium interface has a substantial value.
