Abstract

It is shown that in the case of excitons of intermediate radius (comparable to the interatomic spacing) the exciton branch of the dispersion curve has a break caused by its interaction with the vibrational levels of a localized electronic excitation. The break lies in the central region of the band and remains when exciton damping is taken into account. Its existence is confirmed by experimental spectroscopic data in the case of inert gas crystals.
