Abstract

It is shown that the experimentally observed asymmetry of the ferroelectric hysteresis loop, change in sign, and appearance of a peak in the magnetoelectric susceptibility near the phase transition temperature, as well as the presence of a maximum in the temperature dependence of the spontaneous magnetization observed in Ni–I boracite can be explained on the basis of a thermodynamic theory that includes the rhombic symmetry of the crystal in the paramagnetic phase and the small magnitude of the rhombic distortions of the cubic lattice. In a magnetic field the existence of a tricritical point near the phase transition temperature is predicted.
