Abstract
We report an experimental study of the low frequency internal friction in argon at low temperatures down to 4.2 K. A peak is observed in the low frequency internal friction at a temperature of 24 K, at which the argon, according to data on the relaxation of stress and uniaxial active strain, is characterized by a Peierls mechanism of plastic deformation and by a brittle failure mode.
