Abstract

We study the dynamics of a two-dimensional electron crystal with screened interaction. This system can be produced by surface electrons on a helium film covering a metal substrate. The collective excitation spectrum of this crystal is computed by the Ewald method using an arbitrary screening parameter (the ratio of twice the film thickness to the lattice constant). The results are used to determine the stability of a charged helium film over a metal substrate. We find the stability condition for this film and the critical electron density at which the film stability breaks down.
