Abstract

The distribution of the field of coupled electromagnetic and acoustic waves in a compensated metal plate in a magnetic field perpendicular to the surface is investigated. It is shown that coupling of the waves not only alters the spectrum of the acoustic and electromagnetic waves, but also endows the electromagnetic and acoustic fields with four modes: skin (Alfvén), doppleron, acoustic, and Gantmakher–Kaner modes. The spectrum of coupled normal modes is calculated, along with the magnitude and distribution of the field of each mode in the cases of excitation by an external acoustic wave and by an external electromagnetic wave. The relative variation of the acoustic, doppleron, and Gantmakher–Kaner components in the vicinity of the doppleron–phonon and Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonances are discussed.
