Abstract

The specific heat of a Kr−CO solid solution with a carbon monoxide concentration of 0.95 mol.% has been studied in the temperature range 2−12 K. In order that the experimental and calculated results should agree it is necessary to assume an appreciable renormalization of the effective rotational constant B/Beff≈2.5. It was found that the barrier hindering rotation of CO molecules in a Kr matrix is ∽10B≈27.5 K. The existence of a low-temperature peak in the specific heat with a maximum in the region of T∽0.3 − 0.4 K is predicted.
