Abstract

We have studied the influence of hydrostatic pressure on the splitting Δ of two Kramers doublets of the Ce3+ ion in lanthanum ethylsulfate. The rate of change of the initial splitting ∂Δ/∂P = −2.8 cm−1/kbar is significantly larger than in yttrium and europium ethylsulfate, due to the difference in the ionic radii of the impurity and substituted ions.
