Abstract

The equilibrium phase diagram of nitrogen–krypton solid solutions has been studied by the x-ray method. The mutual solubility limits of the components were determined in the temperature range from 5 K to the melting temperature of the mixtures. The temperature and concentration dependences of molar volumes of the phases observed have been studied. The coexistence of two phases of the same symmetry was observed at T > 49 K, namely hexagonal crystals of krypton and nitrogen. The possibility of supercooling the hexagonal phase of krypton to extremely low temperatures was demonstrated. Based on the temperature dependences obtained for the ratio of lattice parameters c/a for the hcp phase of krypton, the suggestion is made of an appreciable increase in the correlation intermolecular interaction of nitrogen molecules in these crystals at T < 30K.
