Abstract

X-ray studies of normal hydrogen at T = 13.6 K reveal a phase transformation with a negative volume jump ΔV = 0.16 cm3/mole, occurring without a change in the hexagonal symmetry of the lattice. It is established that the volume jump is accompanied by an appreciable jump in the ratio of the lattice parameters c/a, which for the high-temperature phase corresponds to close packing of spheres. It is shown that the introduction of krypton impurities into the hydrogen stabilizes the fcc structure near the melting temperature of n-H2.
