Abstract

The plasticity of solid methane has been studied for free-standing specimens, 30 mm in length and 6 mm in diameter, under uniaxial stress. An anomalously high plastic deformation (εf > 50%) was found for methane at low temperatures, 12–26 K. In this temperature range, crystalline argon, which has equilibrium thermodynamic characteristics similar to those of methane, is practically a brittle material for which εf < 1%.
