Abstract
It is demonstrated experimentally that in order to produce the paramagnetic effect in a cylindrical superconductor, transformed into the intermediate state by a current flowing along it, a longitudinal magnetic field exceeding some threshold value is required. Contamination of the metal lowers the threshold value. The existence of a threshold field proves the validity of the London model of the intermediate state of a cylinder carrying a current.
