Abstract

The thermal evolution of the exciton luminescence spectrum of argon cryocrystals has been studied for the first time in the temperature range 5−40° K. A new maximum has been discovered in the exciton luminescence spectrum and has been identified as corresponding to forbidden transitions from the Γ′3/2 states. We discuss the necessity of taking into account the polariton effects in the luminescence of argon. Self-localized, single-site excitons are proven to exist in the bulk of the sample.
