Abstract

Quantum diffusion (configurational relaxation) has been detected in solid deuterium. Evidence of its existence has been obtained in calorimetric studies of deuterium containing 2.8% paradeuterium. The characteristic configurational relaxation time τ = 630±50 h (T = 1.65 °K) is in good agreement with the predictions of the resonance-conversion model of Oyarzun and Van Kranendonk. The conversion rate constant in deuterium is determined to be k = 4.8⋅10−4 h−1.
