Modulated magnetic structures in some monoclinic systems (MnOOH and compounds isomorphic to it)

Abstract

Possible mechanisms for the formation of modulated magnetic structures in monoclinic antiferromagnets (space group C2h−P21/m) are examined. The corresponding points of the phase transitions from the paramagnetic state into the superstructure are found, and the range of values of the phenomenological parameters of the thermodynamic potential for which the phase transition occurs in the required channel, and the parameters of the superstructures at low temperatures, i.e., far from a phase transition, are determined. Possible experiments on identification of the mechanism for the formation of the incommensurate magnetic phase are discussed.
