Abstract

SYNOPSIS Myrmecochorous plants (plants with seeds dispersed by ants) are virtually absent from all non-fynbos vegetation types. In this study It IS shown that, contrary to previous findings, ants in non-fynbos vegetation types do find elaiosome bearing seed and bury them. The evolutionary implications for a co-evolved seed dispersal system are discussed.
