Orientational ordering of molecules in small crystalline particles of nitrogen and carbon monoxide

Abstract

Two possible channels of relaxation of surface structures formed upon emergence of (111) and (100) planes on the surface of nitrogen and carbon monoxide are investigated. It is shown that the orientationally ordered arrangement of molecules on the surface leads to additional peaks in diffraction patterns, which are not typical of bulk crystals. The experimental temperature behavior of an additional peak (130) indicates that the temperatures of transition to an orientationally disordered phase on the surfaces of nitrogen and carbon monoxide are very close and lie between 30 and 38 K.
