Abstract

The instability of the charged liquid helium surface is investigated experimentally in the case of partial compensation of the confining electric field by the surface electron layer. The experiments reveal an unexpectedly strong temperature dependence of the critical confining field at which the breakdown of the liquid 4He surface is observed.
