Abstract
A quasi-one-dimensional electron system over liquid helium is realized for the first time by using the curved surface of helium flowing into parallel grooves of an optical diffraction grating. The conductivity of surface electrons moving along and across the grooves is found to be strongly anisotropic. The estimated values of the mobility of electrons moving along the grooves are close to the value of mobility for a bulk liquid.
