Abstract

A study of the optical absorption spectrum of the easy-plane two-sublattice antiferromagnetic MnCO3 in an external magnetic field reveals a linear splitting of bands having the same origin as the linear magneto-optical effect. The splitting is of intraionic type and is induced by the spin-orbit interaction in second-order perturbation theory.
