Abstract
Synopsis The numerous data on the shrinkage of butt welded joints published in the technical literature frequently refer to different testing conditions and are, in consequence, not suitable for comparing individual welding processes with each other. The study reported here gives results from a series of tests performed in constant conditions to record shrinkage and angular distortion of butt welded joints with variation of groove shape, parent metal and plate thickness. The results confirmed the logarithmic relation of shrinkage with number of weld passes. The coefficients were determined for the various cases. It is also shown that heat input and groove shape are factors determining the degree of shrinkage.
