Abstract

The processes of induction of linear birefringence by light and its relaxation are studied in tetragonal Ca3Mn2Ge3O12 and cubic Cd3Mn2Ge3O12 manganese-germanium garnets. It is shown that the time dependences Δn(t) of the photo-induced birefringence measured during induction and relaxation of the effect are nonexponential in nature and are described by the law exp[−(t/τ)β] which takes into account the dispersion of characteristic times τ for these processes.
