Abstract

It is shown that available experimental data on the EPR spectra of a bivalent copper ion in the octahedral coordination are not in accord with the two-mode cluster model of the Jahn–Teller effect for a number of parameters. In this connection, a modified cluster model is proposed, which takes into account the population of a large number of weakly split vibronic states. This model is used for explaining all the experimentally observed peculiarities in the manifestation of the Jahn–Teller effect in the EPR spectrum.
