Abstract

It is shown that temperature-electric domains (TED) formed spontaneously in normal metals at low temperatures under Joule heating of the sample may have very high velocities, approaching the electron velocity on the Fermi surface. This new dynamic mode is associated with anisotropy in the thermal conductivity of a metal. A general formula expressing the TED velocity in terms of the characteristics of heat removal from the metal sample and nondiagonal components of the thermal conductivity tensor is obtained.
