Abstract

The anisotropy of instability evolution in textured yttrium samples with residual magnetization ≈ 600 emu/g is studied in magnetic fields up to 12 T. Large (∼500 emu/g) jumps in the magnetic moment of the sample associated with magnetothermal instability are discovered. An unusually large (∼10−4) magnetostriction due to magnetic flow pinning is revealed, as well as the stabilization of magnetic properties of textured samples as a result of magnetization reversal.
