Abstract
Electrical properties of a contact formed by burning silver paste into the surface of a BiSrCaCuO crystal are studied. The contact displays tunneling properties of an NIS junction with an energy gap much smaller than in the bulk of a high-temperature superconductor. Such a low value of the gap parameter is attributed to the surface-layer superconductivity suppressed or induced in the HTS by the proximity effect.
