Abstract

The EPR spectra of the Ising magnet KEr(MoO4)2 are studied in the frequency interval 18−30 GHz at temperatures 1.8−4.2 K. Measurement of the angular dependence of the EPR spectrum has led to the detection and investigation of the first-order structural phase transition induced in the paramagnet by an external magnetic field. The critical temperature and field corresponding to the phase transition are estimated. A plausible microscopic model of the cooperative Jahn–Teller effect is proposed to explain the observed transition.
