Abstract

Experimental and theoretical work about energetic ion emission from massive targets obtained with 35 fs laser pulses at an intensity level of 10/sup 18/ W/cm/sup 2/ to 10/sup 19/ W/cm/sup 2/ is reported. Ultrashort laser pulses in combination with a hot electron confining target can drive ions to MeV energies via a direct field acceleration mechanism.
