Abstract
The paper of Bakhtiyar Babadjanov analyses a debate on so-called "popular Muslim customs", particularly veneration of hair of the Prophet and pilgrimage of awliya tombs, taking place in Central Asia, especially in Kokand, during the 19 th century. The author considers these customs as a local form of common Islamic ritual complex and recovers arguments of those who supported such traditions as well as their opponents.
