Abstract

The effect of synthetic polymers polyacrylamid (PAAm) and hydrolyzed polyacrilonitrile (HPAN) on the flow behavior of Na-bentonite dispersions were characterized by plastic viscosity, relative viscosity and yield values. In order to make definite the type of flow behavior, three common empirical equations were tested: Bingham, Power law and Casson equations. The polymers that have been added to the clay suspensions interact with clay particles, according to their ionic or non-ionic character. In this study, the changes in the rheologic properties of different samples, which are bentonite clays, have been studied with various concentrations of polyacrylamid (PAAm) and hydrolyzed polyacrilonitrile (HPAN). It has been determined that the flow properties, such as apparent and plastic viscosity, shear stress and yield value point, change with the clay type, chemical properties of the additive material and their concentration. All the results have been commented by taking the interaction between the clay and the polymer molecules into consideration. All experimental results were evaluated by considering the interaction modes between the particles and polyacrylates molecules.
