Abstract
We have studied absorption and luminescence spectra of gamma- and neutron-irradiated cerium-doped gadolinium oxyorthosilicate (Gd2SiO5:Ce) crystals. The results demonstrate that irradiation of the crystals removes oxygen ions from nine-coordinate oxygen structures around the silicon ions, increasing the number of seven-coordinate structures and transforming Ce1 centers into Ce2.
