THE SOCIAL STRATIFICATION OF THE TURKESTAN GOVERNMENT GENERAL SOCIETY
Abstract
The article deals with the transformation of the social structure of the society of Turkestan in the conditions of the colonial regime. The conquest led to serious changes in political and economic life, as well as in social relations of the local population. It contributed to the involvement of the region in the economic life of Russia, which was at that time at a higher level of development, intensified commodity-money relations, industrial and railway construction. But it brought the population of the region a complete loss of independence, turned the richest region into a colony and doomed it to the position of a monocultural raw material appendage of the metropolis. This policy interrupted the established way of life of the indigenous population, the traditional estate structure of society was destroyed, as a result of which it began to stratify in accordance with the types of occupation of its social strata.\n\nIndex Terms: colonial regime, conquest, social structure, indigenous population, stratification, class division, profession, dehkans, artisans, merchants, Muslim clergy, national intelligentsia, European population, transformation
