Abstract

In the early twentieth century, libraries and reading rooms set up by the public or local administration began to be established in the provinces and cities of Turkestan. This article describes the history of public libraries established in the provinces and territories of Turkestan in 1889–1910. In particular, the activities of the Fergana military governor's office, Syrdarya and Caspian regions, Samarkand military governor's office and libraries in Syrdarya region were widely covered. The study made extensive use of archival documents, books of the Soviet era and research data conducted during the years of independence.
