Abstract
In this article, it is examined the key FLT methods that are still in use in schools and provided the theory of language and learning that underpins them, as well as their primary characteristics, activities, and approaches, their foundation and decline, and a general assessment of all of them. The Grammar-Translation Method, Structuralist Methods, and Communicative Approach have all been investigated. Following some consideration of educational advances, the Task-Based and Process models are proposed as alternatives. Finally, a link between curricular innovation, change and teacher development is established.
