Abstract
Recently, obesity has been defined as a new chronic non-infectious "epidemic", which has significantly "rejuvenated" in recent years. According to information provided by the WHO, the number of overweight children is constantly increasing worldwide. Recent discoveries allow us to consider obesity in children as a leading factor in cardiovascular risk in later adulthood. The article presents the causes of development, risk factors and pathogenetic aspects of obesity in children. The biological role of adipokines, markers of the systemic inflammatory response and oxidative stress, which contribute to the progression of the disease, is highlighted.
